ANTS 12/4/17
Some owners report that they have seen an unusual increase in different kinds of ants around the inside of the condos. I called The Bug Man, the company who is contracted to spray the outside of the condos for bugs and pests. They said that the unusual amount of rain and the saturation of ground water has forced the ants out of the ground to dryer conditions and that this is not just happening at Molokai Shores and on Molokai, but all over the Hawaiian islands.
The Bug Men offer a special spray treatment where they will spray the insides of your condo when they arrive for their quarterly exterior spraying. This can be set up with Melo in the main office. I believe the cost is $25. The owners are responsible for the interior treatments if you would like that done. The condo AOAO is responsible for the exterior treatments.
Another option that I use is tiny ant bait traps. These traps can be purchased at any of the local hardware stores for several dollars. These traps are not an instant killer. It will take a few weeks for the ants to take the bait back to the colony and to kill them. For me it is more of a preventative approach. They make similar traps that are larger for cockroaches. I also use these as preventative treatment.
In the last few years, pest control companies came out with a barrier spray, which you can spray around different areas where ants and other insects might be coming into your condos such as walkways and patios (i.e. ortho home defense insect killer is one brand). This product is sprayed around on the ground and is suppose to help control the amount of pests that cross it. Most of the time these products do not work well if it rains or if where you sprayed gets wet, -it will dilute the product.
Hope this helps

Pest Control Update
We have changed our contract with the Bugman Pest Control Company. We are now on a bimonthly (every other month) spray program. In a few months you should start seeming a difference in the amount of insects on the property. If you are still getting more than reasonable amount of insects inside your condo, you can pay $25 to have the Bugman spray inside your condo. This can be set up with the main office and the next time the Bugman come to spray the outside of the condos, they will take care of the owners who choose to add this additional service.
The AOAO is responsible for the outsides of the building and the owners are responsible for everything inside.

Termites Beware
Termite Bait Station Update - 12/5/17
The termite bait stations have been in the ground for around 6 months. The maintenance team checks the traps on a monthly inspection looking for evidence of ground termites returning. Inside each bait station is wood cartridges used as bait. If there are signs that termites are eating the wood bait, pesticide cartridges will be switched out and the pesticide is suppose to kill the termites.
Paul reports there are no signs of termites. He said a few of the bait cartridges had to be replaced because they got saturated with water.
It is a good sign that nothing has been found in the bait stations. They were put in place as preventative measures. The bait stations are placed approximately every 20 feet around all of our buildings. So if termites return from the ground, we should know.
So in a nutshell, things with the bait stations are going well.
